Arctic Blast Readiness: 5 Tips to Protect Your Home This Weekend

Winter’s Embrace: A Home’s Snow-Covered Entryway

With extreme cold temperatures headed for the St. Charles County area this weekend, it’s time to shift our focus from curb appeal to cold-weather protection. At Susan Brewer Service First Real Estate, we know that your home is your biggest investment, and a little preparation can prevent costly repairs when the mercury drops.

Here are five essential tips to keep your sanctuary safe and warm during the upcoming freeze:

1. Prevent Frozen Pipes:

  • The Tip: When temperatures dip into the single digits or below, your pipes are at risk. Open cabinet doors under kitchen and bathroom sinks to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.

  • The Trick: Let a very thin stream of water—just a trickle—drip from your faucets overnight. Moving water is much less likely to freeze, which can prevent the pressure buildup that leads to bursts.

2. Seal Out the Drafts:

  • The Tip: Keep the warmth in and the utility bills down by checking for drafts. Use “draft dodgers” or rolled-up towels at the base of exterior doors.

  • The Trick: Check windows for air leaks. If you feel a breeze, a temporary seal with weatherstripping or even heavy curtains can make a world of difference in maintaining your home’s internal temperature.

3. Optimize Your Heating System:

  • The Tip: Your furnace will be working overtime this weekend! Make sure it’s up to the task by replacing your air filter if you haven’t recently. A dirty filter restricts airflow and forces the system to work harder.

  • The Trick: Keep your thermostat at a consistent temperature. While it’s tempting to turn it down at night to save money, extreme cold makes it very difficult for your heater to “catch up” in the morning.

4. Protect Your Exterior:

  • The Tip: If you haven’t already, disconnect all garden hoses from outdoor spigots. Leaving a hose attached can trap water in the pipe inside the wall, leading to a major leak once it thaws.

  • The Trick: If you have an irrigation system, ensure it is fully blown out and the main shut-off valve is turned off.

5. Safety First (Detectors):

  • The Tip: Since windows remain tightly shut and heating systems run constantly, carbon monoxide safety is paramount. Ensure your CO detectors and smoke alarms have fresh batteries and are functioning correctly.

  • The Trick: Never use a gas oven or a portable generator to heat your home, as these are major safety hazards.

Stay warm and safe this weekend! Taking these small steps today can save you from big headaches on Monday morning.
