The Mid-Summer Moving Survival Guide: Tips for a Stress-Free Relocation

It’s no secret that summer is the peak season for real estate. With the kids out of school and the weather clear, it is often the most logical time to pack up the truck and transition into a new home.

However, moving during a Missouri mid-summer heatwave is no joke. When the thermometer ticks past 90°F and the humidity sets in, a standard move can quickly become exhausting.

To help you beat the heat and stay organized, we’ve put together the ultimate mid-summer moving survival guide.

1. Lock In Your Movers Yesterday

Because June, July, and August are the busiest months of the year for relocations, the best local moving companies book out weeks—or even months—in advance.

  • Book Early: The moment your closing date is confirmed, get on a moving company's schedule.

  • The Early Bird Catch: Request a morning slot if possible. Starting at 7:00 AM or 8:00 AM allows you to load the heaviest items before the midday sun hits its peak intensity.

2. Protect Heat-Sensitive Items

When you pack a moving truck, remember that the back of that enclosed vehicle acts like an oven. Temperatures inside a moving container can easily skyrocket well past 100°F.

  • Keep it in the Car: Do not pack electronics, vinyl records, family photo albums, or medications in the moving truck. Load these into the cab of your personal, air-conditioned vehicle.

  • Beware of the Meltdown: Keep a close eye on candles, cosmetics, and aerosol cans. If left in a hot truck for a few hours, they can melt or rupture, ruining your other packed belongings.

3. Take Care of the Moving Crew (and Yourself!)

Whether you are hiring professionals or recruiting friends with the promise of pizza, moving in high heat is physically demanding.

  • Hydration Station: Set up a dedicated cooler filled with ice, water bottles, and sports drinks loaded with electrolytes at both your old house and the new one.

  • Plan for Breaks: Don't try to power through the heat. Take frequent breaks in the shade or in air-conditioned rooms to prevent heat exhaustion.

4. Coordinate Your Utilities Early

There is nothing worse than arriving at your beautiful new home after a long day of heavy lifting, only to open the door and realize the air conditioning isn't running.

  • The 48-Hour Rule: Call your local electric and water providers to schedule the transfer of utilities at least a few days before your official closing or move-in date.

  • Pre-Cool the House: Ideally, try to turn the A/C on at your new home 24 hours before you start moving boxes in. This ensures the house is crisp, cool, and welcoming when the heavy lifting begins.

Your "First Night" Survival Box

When you finally collapse into your new home at the end of moving day, the last thing you want to do is hunt through twenty taped boxes just to find your toothbrush. Pack a clearly labeled plastic bin that travels in the car with you containing:

  • Toilet paper and paper towels

  • Phone chargers

  • Basic toiletries and towels

  • A change of light, breathable clothes

  • Trash bags and basic cleaning wipes
