Summer is a great time to take a vacation. School is out, the weather is warm and whether you are going for an extended weekend or an all-out road trip, it is a good idea to protect your home while you are away. Here are a few tips to help you to keep your home free of unwanted guests and other emergencies:
Inside Your Home
Set Timers on Interior Lighting – Making it appear that someone is home (even when they are not) is the best way to deter burglars. Some modern timers can even connect to your phone or alternate times to make your home appear lived in.
Protect Your Pipes – Even if you are just gone for the weekend, it is a good idea to shut off the water in your home. If you don’t want to shut off the entire home, it is a good idea to shut off the supply to common leak issues like the washing machine and dishwasher.
Check Doors and Windows – Before you leave, take a few moments to walk your entire home to insure that every door and window is locked.
Set Your HVAC – If you have a programmable thermostat, you can set the program to lower your heat and air conditioning usage. If not, set your temperature so that you conserve energy costs. Don’t forget to change the batteries in your thermostat before you go.
Don’t Announce Your Departure – While it is fun to let everyone on social media know that you are going on vacation, posting yourself on an airplane lets burglars know that you are out of town as well. Share your vacation photos after you return with family and friends.
Outside Your Home
Keep Up with Lawn Care – If you typically mow your lawn yourself, it is a good idea to arrange for a neighbor or landscaping company to mow your lawn while you are away. An unkempt lawn is a signal to burglars that you are away.
Stop Mail and Deliveries – Stopping mail and not scheduling deliveries while you are away is always a good idea. If that is not an option, it may be wise to ask a trusted neighbor to bring in mail and deliveries while you are away.
Lock Your Garage – Most automatic openers have the ability to be “locked” while you are away. Also, don’t forget to lock any service doors and the door leading from your garage to your home.
