As we get closer to the holidays, planning for overnight guests is a part of hosting events this time of year. A well-decorated and thoughtful guest bedroom will help your visitors feel right at home. Here are some ideas on how to create the perfect guest bedroom:
Add a Touch of Luxury
Treat your guests with luxurious bedding. Start with high-thread-count, 100% cotton sheets, then add a thick duvet or quilt and pile on lots of fluffy pillows.
Include a TV
May guests who like to watch television to unwind will appreciate a TV in the guest room. It will help to make them feel at home and allow them to watch the programs they prefer without feeling like they are keeping you from watching yours.
Everyone’s a Fan
To ensure your guests are completely comfortable, consider offering a ceiling fan or portable fan for them to use, as needed. There are many that use a fan year-round to help them to sleep.
Add a Throw
A cozy throw folded neatly across the foot of the bed or casually tossed across, adds in a little extra color and will also come in handy on chilly nights.
Bedside Lighting
A small lamp next to the bed will allow guests to read, catch up on email or shop online without disturbing the rest of the house.
Window Treatments are a Must
Inexpensive blinds, roller shades or pre-packaged curtains can be added to any windows that aren’t covered. A guest in your home is on vacation and will appreciate a dark room for sleeping in.
What’s Your Wi-Fi Password?
Add your wi-fi password to a frame on the dresser to allow guests to have easy access to the internet while they stay. It will save them from having to ask for it and allow them to immediately begin enjoying their stay.
Mirror, Mirror
A small mirror hung in the guest room provides a spot for touching up makeup or putting on jewelry. If there is enough space, a long dressing mirror is an even better idea.
It’s Time
Ensure that guests don’t miss any planned activities (or an early morning flight) by placing a small clock in their room.
Add a Personal Touch
If your overnight guests are family or close friends, it’s always a nice touch to display photos of happy times spent together; everyone enjoys a trip down memory lane.
Make It Easy
Take a cue from hotels and short term rentals, and add places for guests to easily hang belongings. Whether hung behind the door or on the wall, an inexpensive accordion rack adds extra storage space in a pinch. Just tack it up to allow guests to hang the items they’re most likely to forget before heading out the door — like coats, keys, hats and even umbrellas.
Don’t Forget Fresh Linens
Use a deep basket to stash guest towels and extra blankets. Place it visibly in the room so guests have everything they need to freshen up on arrival.
Make Space in the Closet
If your guest bedroom closet has become overflow for items you no longer wear (too small, too big, out of style), consider this the perfect time to clean it out and donate or sell pieces you no longer want. Your guests will thank you for being able to hang up their clothes on arrival, and long after your guests have left, you’ll enjoy having a little more storage space of your own.
